4 signs your child is ready for potty training

4 signs your child is ready for potty training

Spotting the sign when your child is ready can make the whole process faster. On the contrary, delaying it can result in the process to last longer, with far more accidents, and let's be honest, a far more stressful experience for you.
Well, anyone that has already gone through the "joy of potty training" will have their say, and rightly so, but luckily there are some clues that can help you gauge when your little one is ready.
Beside being able to communicate or at least to some degree, they need to be

physically ready, so they’ll need to be able to sit themselves on the potty and be able to stand up when they’ve finished.

If your child can follow instructions, albeit simple, and let you know what they want or need, that could also be a sign of readiness.

1. They know when they've got a wet or 💩 dirty nappy.

If your child doesn't tell you he is wet, it could be down to the absorbency of the nappy, masquing the feeling of being dry/wet. Try to fold some kitchen paper in their nappy, will allow your child to start understanding the wet feeling, and to communicate it to you.

2. They get to know when they're peeing and may tell you they're doing it.

Now, in time we would clearly prefer they would say it BEFORE and not AFTER peeing, but again, all in due time. In any case, always praise. It's a big step to recognise passing urine for a little one.

3. The gap between wetting is at least an hour.

if it's less, potty training may fail, and at the very least will be extremely hard work for you. If the length of time your child is going in between wees is widening could lead to a pattern of less frequent but bigger wees, means the bladder is able to hold on for longer, and is a good sign of readiness.

4. They show they need to pee by fidgeting or going somewhere quiet or hidden.

If you see them moving from one foot to another, wiggling on the spot, you can help them recognise it as a sign and suggest they may need to wee and sit on the potty/toilet.

Now that you have ascertain that your little one is ready, let the fun begin! Yes, it will be a bit of a roller-coaster, and yes, there will be times that your will think of giving up, but hey, let's be frank, potty training is a mastered skill that your child need and will learn in time, so give yourself grace and be patient. I promise it won't be forever. Plus, you can always come here to rant or find other tips and advice.
